What happened?

Hsiao-Wei Wang has resigned as co-executive director of the Ethereum Foundation after returning from a sabbatical. Her exit follows other senior departures and adds to scrutiny of the organization’s leadership and strategic direction.

Why it matters

The move matters because the Ethereum Foundation plays a central role in supporting development across the Ethereum ecosystem. Wang’s departure comes at a time when the organization is already facing community scrutiny over governance, priorities and strategy, while Ethereum contends with competition from rival blockchains.

Hsiao-Wei Wang has stepped down as co-executive director of the Ethereum Foundation, effective immediately. According to CoinDesk, Wang announced the decision in a post on X on Thursday after returning from a recent sabbatical.

The move matters because the Ethereum Foundation plays a central role in supporting development across the Ethereum ecosystem. Wang’s departure comes at a time when the organization is already facing community scrutiny over governance, priorities and strategy, while Ethereum contends with competition from rival blockchains.

Wang said the sabbatical gave her time to reflect on her priorities and future plans. She framed the decision as a personal step back from the role, while also pointing to Ethereum’s broader mission beyond any single organization or position.

Her resignation follows that of fellow co-executive director Tomasz Stańczak, who had said earlier this year that he would leave after helping guide a leadership transition at the Switzerland-based nonprofit. During Wang’s sabbatical, Ethereum Foundation board member Bastian Aue helped oversee that transition and has taken on a larger interim role after both co-executive directors departed.

CoinDesk reported that at least eight senior figures have left the Ethereum Foundation over the past five months. The latest exit extends a period of leadership churn for one of crypto’s most closely watched ecosystem organizations.
