Japan’s Metaplanet moved 3,881 bitcoin, worth about $247 million, across several transactions over a three-hour period on Wednesday, according to Arkham data cited by CoinDesk. Bitcoin was trading near $63,600 at the time of the report.
The detail that matters for markets is where the coins went. CoinDesk reported that the bitcoin moved from Metaplanet’s cold wallets to new addresses also controlled by the company, rather than to an exchange, so the transfer does not by itself indicate selling pressure.
Large corporate wallet movements can attract attention because exchange deposits are often watched as a possible sign of incoming supply. In this case, the on-chain pattern described in the report points to internal custody management instead of distribution.
Metaplanet has made similar transfers before. CoinDesk noted that the company moved nearly 5,000 BTC in March through a comparable sequence of test transactions followed by larger transfers to new wallets, which analysts at the time interpreted as custody reshuffling.
The transfer comes as Metaplanet remains deeply exposed to bitcoin’s price. The company holds roughly 43,000 BTC acquired at an average price of about $96,000, leaving it with an unrealized loss of about $1.4 billion with bitcoin near $63,600. Metaplanet has been one of the most aggressive corporate bitcoin buyers since April 2024 and has stated a target of 210,000 BTC.
