Zcash Teams Propose Ironwood Pool After Orchard Shielded Pool Flaw

Zcash teams have proposed a new shielded pool called Ironwood after a flaw in the existing Orchard pool affected the network’s ability to verify supply within that pool. Under the proposal, the old Orchard pool would be closed to new activity, while funds would be routed through a turnstile process before entering a newly created shielded pool.

The development matters because supply verification is a core confidence layer for privacy-focused crypto networks. Zcash’s shielded design is meant to protect transaction privacy, but the Orchard flaw created a need for a structured path that separates the affected pool from future shielded activity.

Ironwood is designed as that path. By closing Orchard to new activity, the proposal would prevent additional funds from entering the old pool. The turnstile step would create a transition point before assets move into the new shielded environment.
