Her case is that recurring errors, such as choosing the wrong network, overpaying fees, or sending assets to unsupported destinations, should be treated as signals of product weakness rather than dismissed as client error.
The argument matters because crypto is no longer only a speculative tool for users willing to absorb losses. Shangett points to people using crypto for practical needs in places affected by weakening local currencies, high inflation, costly remittances, or restricted access to foreign currency. In that context, a confusing transaction flow can turn open access into a system that is usable mainly by people who can afford to learn through loss.
Shangett frames the issue around what she calls an “error budget”: the amount a person can lose while learning a financial product before it stops making economic sense. A $25 fee may be minor on a $10,000 transfer, but it is a major cost on a $100 transaction. Fixed or unpredictable costs, she argues, hit smaller users harder, while irreversible errors carry heavier consequences for those with limited savings.
The article does not reject self-custody. Instead, it argues that control over funds and better product assistance can coexist. Shangett says self-custodial tools can help by detecting incompatible networks, explaining permissions clearly, simulating transaction outcomes, flagging disproportionate fees, and making risky actions visibly different from routine ones without taking control of user assets.
Her broader point is that education alone cannot solve predictable failure modes. If users repeatedly confuse the same networks, approve permissions they do not understand, or only discover the true cost after confirming a transaction, the interface is part of the problem. For Web3 to become more inclusive, she argues, products must reduce complexity rather than making expensive trial and error the price of admission.
